Last Friday I visited The Message Trust’s Community Grocery which was recently set up to support the Wythenshawe community.
The Message Trust was inspired by Marcus Rashford’s free school meals campaign to create a grocery at the heart of the community with the aim to bridge the gap between supermarkets and food banks.
There’s a £5 annual membership fee to join The Community Grocery project, which also gives members access to jobs workshops, career advice, mental wellbeing courses, CV writing help and computer literacy lessons. It’s then £3 per food shop with members being able to visit twice a week.
So many Wythenshawe families are feeling the financial impact of Covid-19. I hope this new community imitative will help some of our families in the difficult few months ahead.
