On Monday I participated virtually in the House of Commons during the Opposition Day Debate on Council Tax.
Both local authorities, Manchester and Trafford in Wythenshawe and Sale East are being forced by the Government to increase Council Tax to try and bridge the gap in their budgets for 2021/22. Forcing councils to hit families with a council tax rise in the middle of a pandemic is wrong. I asked the Secretary of State to scrap the planned council tax rise and do whatever is necessary to support councils.
In a community such as ours many do not have the funds to stretch an extra few pounds per month. Rishi Sunak was very quick to tell councils to do ‘whatever it takes’ which was the tight thing to – they must now make good on their promise and reimburse Councils for doing what they were asked.
