Hilary Benn MP, Labour's Shadow Communities Secretary, joined the party's parliamentary candidate for the Wythenshawe & Sale East by-election Mike Kane in a visit to a community centre to meet pensioners and community groups today to hear of the challenges faced as a result of disproportionate cuts to local authority budgets.
Manchester City Council is suffering £284-per-head cut in its spending power at the hands of the Tory-led government, yet the Prime Minister's own constituency's local authority - West Oxfordshire - in one of the most affluents parts of Britain is only facing a £59-per-head cut.
Shadow Communities Secretary Hilary Benn MP said:
"It is a shameful fact that David Cameron is cutting the spending power of Manchester Council by £284-per-person while making sure his own back yard in West Oxfordshire only has to manage a £59-per-head cut.
"Labour is the only party standing up for local communities who want their services protecting - we will get the deficit down but we'll do it fairly, not by taking five times more from areas like Wythenshawe than from Tory heartlands in the south."
Mike Kane said:
"I asked Hilary Benn to join me in coming to meet local pensioners and community groups because while Cameron's government have made it clear they don't want to listen to them, Labour does.
"If I'm elected as MP for this fantastic constituency, these will be the people I'll be standing up for. I won't stand by and watch this out-of-touch government get away with robbing our people of the services they rely on."
